What is Self Publishing?

Self-publishing is the publishing of books and other media by the authors of those works, rather than by established, independent publishers. Although it represents a small percentage of the publishing industry in terms of sales, it has been present in one form or another for centuries, and has seen an increase in activity with the advancement of publishing technology, including xerography, desktop publishing systems, print on demand, and the World Wide Web. Once you’ve written the book you will probably have it on your computer in a WORD format – and from that you somehow need to produce an actual book. This includes setting out the book size, the margins, the font, the point size, the page numbers, chapter heading, and so on. Once we have professionally typeset your book, it will then be sent to you be checked. Once you are happy with this, you then proceed with the book cover design. Grosvenor House Publishing will then allow you to go online and design your book cover with our unique BDM (book design module). Here you can choose from one of over 2000 royalty free images to use on your cover. Or if you prefer, simply upload your own image. Once the main book cover image is in place, you then start to add your text. Choose from numerous fonts, sizes and colours. Once the front cover has been designed, simply move to the back cover. Here you will be allowed to upload a picture of yourself and add the back cover text. This is a simple and quick process. When you are happy with your design, simply click ‘send’ and our designers will receive your design. From here, they will proceed to copy exactly what you have designed in high resolution for print. We will add a barcode, your unique ISBN number and any other images or text required.

Once you have approved this, it is then sent to print. This process normally takes approximately 5-7 days. You will then be sent 5 complimentary books included in your £495. Your book is now stored on a massive central server and is available to be printed at anytime - even one copy at a time.

You now have your book! You then need to start marketing your book. This is where Self Publishing comes into its own. It’s up to you to organise local radio interviews, press releases for your local papers, visiting your local books stores and so on. You can probably do more than most ‘PR’ companies that will offer you the world for a few thousand pounds – examples are ‘bookings’ on Richard & Judy’, reviews from top national newspapers etc. but be careful this is most likely far from the actual truth. Why not do it yourself whereby you’re in complete control of what is said about your book, what audience it is seen by etc. remember this book has taken you months, maybe years to write and you’re the best person to sell it.
